RNA

RNA

What is it?...

RNA's role is to act as a messenger carrying instructions from DNA for controlling the synthesis of proteins.

Main Points...
  • RNA stands for "Ribonucleic Acid".
  • RNA has 4 bases just like DNA (A) Adenine, (U) Uracil, (C) Cytosine, (G) Guanidine
  • RNA begins in the nucleus but eventually travels out.
  • There are 3 types of RNA...
  • Messenger RNA (mRNA) - Carries a message based on the DNA
  • Transfer RNA (tRNA) - Transfers the message or (mRNA)
  • Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) -  rRNA reads the instructions found in the mRNA molecules in a cell and builds proteins from these mRNAs by chemically linking together amino acids
  • Each RNA nucleotide consists of a nitrogenous base, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate.
  • RNA can be shaped like a single helix, a straight molecule, or may be bet or twisted upon itself.
  • RNA performs many functions in an organism, such as coding, decoding, regulating, and expressing genes.
