Main Ideas:- A deletion is the removal of one or more nucleotides in a DNA sequence
- When a nucleotide is wrongly inserted or deleted from a codon the affects are often time drastic. This is referred to as a frameshift mutation which can affect every codon in a particular genetic sequence by throwing the entire three by three codon structure out of whack.
Example: Say you have the code GAU GAC UCC GCU AGG this would code for the amino acids aspartate, aspartate, serine, alanine, arginine.
If the "A" in GAU were deleted the code would become GUG ACU CCG UAG G. This would result in every single codon coding for a new amino acid, this would mean you have completely different proteins coded for during translation. This would also result in catastrophic physical changes.
Reflection: A deletion mutation is one of the serious kinds of mutations since it affects the DNA sequence dramatically unlike in substitution which just replaces one nucleotide/ changes one codon. As you can tell, a deletion can change the entire blueprint/all of the codons. I was really surprised how one deletion mutation could affect the entire body and protein production. I learned that not all mutations are caused by external factors but can also occur within the body as a result of an error. Mutations can be used outside of biology because it can affect your genes which makes you who you are. Scientist are now able to analyze your genes and could even find out the cause and effects of your mutations. In some cases you could find ways to prevent deletion but by scientist knowing about it you could find ways to help treat/correct your deletion.

This has very good pictures. What diseases can be caused by deletion?
ReplyDeleteThank you! Deletion syndrome is caused by the deletion of a small section of chromosome 22. It results in a cleft palate, heart defects, autoimmune disorders, and more. The symptoms vary wildly and can be accompanied by learning disabilities and mental illness.
ReplyDeleteWell made and very thought out. How can this type of mutation be combated?
ReplyDeleteNice set up of information. It is easy for me to study.
ReplyDeleteThis mutation can't necessarily be combated. If you have random mutations, you can't control them. You can try to prevent some mutations such as skin cancer by putting on sunscreen/staying out of direct sunlight for long periods of time.
